Memorial Day – Game One with Cleveland.
Thank you to all who serve in the armed services.
It was the first of a three game series with the Cleveland Indians at The Cell in Chicago.
Jose Quintana was on the mound for the Sox against Josh Tomlin
The line up today had Adam Eaton, Marcus Semien, Conor Gillaspie, Dayan Viciedo, Adam Dunn, Alexei Ramirez, Alejandro De Aza, Tyler Flowers and Moises Sierra.
It took the top of the third inning before any runs cross home plate when Cleveland got things started when, Lonnie Chisenhall got a pass to first by way of a walk, Justin Sellers singled to center, Michael Brantley’s single to left scored Chisenhall and moved Sellers to third. Score at the close of the inning 1 – 0 Indians.
The Bottom of the third, the Sox came back and took the lead when, Marcus Semien was safe on first due to an error by Chisenhall, Gillaspie got the first of his 4 hits when he singled to right, Viciedo’s home run to left gave the Sox a 3 – 1 lead at the close of the inning.
It became a pitchers duel again until the top of the sixth inning when Brantly walked, Ryan Raburn singled to right, Brantley crossed home on the advancing play, with Raburn out at second. Score 3 – 2 still in the Sox favor.
The bottom of the sixth inning saw Chicago add to their score when Gillaspie’s second hit was a double to right, Viciedo’s single to left moved Gillaspie to third,A pitching change for Cleveland saw Tomlin to the showers and Josh Outman on the mound. After Dunn striking out, Bryan Shaw took over on the mound, Ramirez and De Aza both hit singles scoring Gillaspie and Viciedo. Adrian Nieto batted in Flowers spot and took over behind the plate. Score 5 – 2 Sox lead
The top of the seventh saw Jake Petricka take over for Quintana and another pitching change for Cleveland when, Marc Rzepczynski took over on the mound, Sox added another run when, Semien made it home on a Gillsapie double, the Sox had a 4 run lead at the close of the inning, 6 – 2 .
Two more pitching changes for the Sox in the Eighth inning saw, Zach Putnam in for Petricka and Scott Downs for Putnam. Bottom of the inning saw the final change for Cleveland when, Carlos Carrasco came into the game.
Scott Downs was able to hold his nerve and hold the Indians from any fight back in the top of the ninth inning.
